The most constrained part of the design is the ring detector, because the telephone company supplies a standardized signal on the line, and all connected equipment must conform to that interface. Both voice and ring signals are alternating current (AC) signals; voice is up to about 4 kHz and a few volts, while the ring signal will be between 20 and 86 Hz, and between 40 and 150 V.
